By winning the Sunday’s match, Sri Lanka has already sealed the series. So, the selectors have turned their focus on giving chances to emerging players. In fact, the selector’s panel has made it their priority this year. For this reason, two players have been dropped and three seniors have been given rest.

Apart from Perera, the other three players – left-arm seamer Vimukthi Perera, allrounder and left-arm spinner Chaturanga de Silva, and left-hand opener Karunaratne – were new additions to the team.

All these three players have recently traveled to West Indies with the Sri Lanka A team. All of them, especially Karunaratne, showed good performances in the tour.

Since November last year, Karunaratne has been playing as the Test opener for Sri Lanka. His last ODI match was in Sri Lanka’s England and Scotland tour in 2011.

The high-profile player who was dropped from the squad was opener Upul Tharanga. The exclusion was the result of two consecutive failures with the bat in the series.

During the tri-series in West Indies, Tharanga was recalled by the selectors. He impressed everyone by playing an innings of not out 174, which is his highest ODI score, in the series. However, he was not able to carry out his form in the following matches.

Another dropped player was middle-order batsman Jehan Mubarak.

Three senior players who have been rested are Lasith Malinga, Rangana Herath, and Mahela Jayawardene. Pacer Nuwan Kulasekara will be unavailable, as he has just recovered from a finger injury.

Sri Lanka has been leading the series by 3-1.
