Mathews might have already built plans about how to form the team in coming years and how to nurture the young talents. And, he might have thought about the strategy to take in the upcoming Bangladesh tour in March.

However, he has to wait. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has confirmed that they are not going to hand over the Test captaincy to Mathews.

Sri Lanka’s cricket is heavily influenced by politics and this recent decision is a reflection of that influence. The country’s sports minster has already announced to appoint a separate Test captain when the selection panel, which will select the new captain, is yet to be appointed.

Considering the authority and sway that the minister has on the cricket board, the declaration about separate Test captain can be considered as final. The minister also expressed his discontent with the tendency to play the same players in all three formats and called for separate teams for each format instead.
