Pakistan all-runder Azhar Mahmood gets visa to come to India for IPL
Former Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood at last managed to get a visa to come to India and take part in the IPL on behalf of Kings XI Punjab. However, his visa will only be valid for Chandigarh and Delhi. He will be available for only six games of which five will be held at Chandigarh in Mohali, which is Kings XI Punjab’s home ground, and one game will be held in Delhi against Delhi Daredevils.
Mahmood is now a permanent citizen of England. He has taken British citizenship and is currently playing for Kent. Kings XI Punjab bought him for $200,000 from the player’s auction held in the last February of this year. Though his franchise expected to have him from the beginning of the IPL season, complication over the visa issue compelled him to miss the first three matches of his team.
Kings XI Punjab have already suffered a setback when England player Stuart Broad had to quit the entire season for a calf injury. Punjab, who is so far not doing well in the tournament, will definitely be inspired by Mahmood’s arrival.
Earlier, Adam Gilchrist, the captain of Kings XI Punjab, had announced Mahmood’s imminent arrival in a briefing at media after their game against Pune Warriors on Thursday. Mahmood also confirmed his captain’s words via his official twitter account. He was expected to arrive in India on Saturday, May 14.
Kings XI Punjab cannot do anything impressive in the tournament so far. They have lost in their first two consecutive matches. After that, Gilchrist made public his disappointment over not having Mahmood at their disposal. He termed Mahmood as a class player and said that he could change the game for them.
Mahmood has been one of the top performers for Kent and has given consistent all-round performance in Twenty20 cricket. Last year, he became the county’s highest run getter in the domestic Twenty20 competition.
He will be the only player who has played for Pakistan in this season of IPL.
